Heat Pump Cost Calculator: Installation Budget
How much does a heat pump cost? Use a written local quote to build the installed project budget, then compare ongoing energy costs in the separate heat-pump vs furnace calculator.
Installed price and running cost are different
The installed price pays for equipment and the work needed to put it into service. Annual running cost depends on the building's heating demand, equipment performance, climate and utility rates. Keep these separate before estimating total ownership cost.
What the budget includes
Enter the complete equipment package, labour, electrical work, distribution changes, permits and removal/disposal allowances. Add a reserve for uncertain work. Enter an upfront rebate only after verifying the applicable program and your eligibility; later tax relief or financing should not be treated as cash available at installation.
Calculation and example
Subtotal = equipment + labour + electrical + ductwork + permits + extras. Gross budget = subtotal × (1 + contingency / 100). Net budget = gross budget − confirmed rebate.
The sample allowances total $11,500 before a 10% reserve. That gives a $12,650 gross budget, with a $0 rebate assumed. These are demonstration inputs, not a researched national average. Enter a second contractor's scope to compare like-for-like costs.
Air-to-air heat pump installation cost
A ducted air-source project may involve an outdoor unit, indoor coil or air handler, controls and existing duct modifications. A ductless system instead needs its approved indoor heads, line sets and drainage. A quote should make the distribution arrangement explicit.
Ground-source and water-heater projects need separate scopes
Ground-source systems may require drilling or ground-loop work. A heat pump water heater serves hot water rather than space heating and may require plumbing and location changes. Do not apply the sample space-heating equipment budget to either project without replacing all relevant scope items.
Questions for the contractor
- Are the selected units a matched combination, with a load calculation behind the selection?
- Is backup heat included, and when is it expected to operate?
- Are panel work, duct changes, permits and disposal included?
- What commissioning, warranty and post-installation support are included?
Compare quotes before modeling payback
Use the net installed difference between alternatives—not the entire heat-pump price—when both systems need replacement. Include any avoided air-conditioner replacement only when it is part of the real alternative. The running-cost calculator is a separate estimate, not a contractor's guarantee.
